When I decided to focus on internet safety, I put together (with the help of SimpleK12) a list of the Top 10 Internet Safety Concerns for Parents. I recently shared this Top 10 list, along with my Online Safety Presentation, during a PTA meeting.
Based on recent experiences within our home, this is certainly our number one concern. Our family has certainly had issues with inappropriate material. You don’t have to search for it either, it comes to you through the most innocent searches. Many parents that I have spoken with have had the same issues and concerns.
Our elementary school embraces technology and just recently added iTouches, new Mac Computers and USB drives are on our school supply list. Our kids are able to search in the safe environment of our school (which is filtered and protected) but then they come home to use their family computer. Unfortunately, many of these home computers have not been set up to filter out inappropriate material.
Some parents think their kids are too young to search for inappropriate material. But if you have been on the computer lately, you know you don’t have to go looking for this material. It comes to you! If you think that your kids are too young to search for certain words, think again. Find out what kids 18 and under are searching for in the article, Top Searches Norton Releases Kid’s Top 100 Searches for 2009.
